Oscars 2020: The Winners

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony was really surprising, making history with the first non-English film to win Best Picture. “Parasite”, the South Korean winning-film is one of the most witty films that I have personally seen in the last years. It breaks the common plot that we have seen over and over again, delivering a powerful social satire wrapped up in a brilliant unpredictable story.

Bong Joon Ho also receives Best Director for “Parasite”, winning over a highly competitive group like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Sam Mendes.

Up until now, the Academy kept international films in a separate section, that is why “1917” was the prediction for “Best Picture”. Even “Joker” was in the cards, however the Academy decided to make history today and completely changed the rules of the game. Chapeau!

Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for the role in “Joker” and there wasn’t any doubt about this category, as he made by far the greatest leading role this year. As for the leading lady, many people had different predictions, but the main choices were Scarlett Johansson and Renée Zellweger. However, Renée was impeccable as Judy Garland in “Judy”, so I really thought she would win.

Brad Pitt and Laura Dern won the Oscars for supporting roles, while Roger Deakins won for Best Cinematography for the wonderful “1917“.

Netflix had a huge attendance at Oscars this year, as most of the nominations were Netflix productions. However, they didn’t get many awards and films like “The Irishman” or “Marriage Story” didn’t receive too much attention.
