Japanese Grannies Rap and Dance in Osaka. Meet the Obachaaan

I sometimes scroll my Facebook feed in the morning, while sipping coffee, the modern way of checking the news like my grandfather was checking the newspaper some years ago. While scrolling down, a very colorful video shows up! I stop and I watch this amazing group of Japanese grannies rapping and dancing in colorful clothes and with loud statement jewelry.

The “idol group” is called Obachaaan, because “obachan” means “old lady” in Japanese. These cool and funky ladies rap and dance in Osaka in animal prints for their latest song called “Oba Funk Osaka”. And I think this is truly fantastic!

The average age of the group is 66 and they embody the stereotype of the Osaka obachan being loud, funny, colorful, talkative, smart and very friendly. These gals definitely look like so much fun!

The band has started in 2011, but I believe this time they really have nailed it and this new colorful bright video will bring them worldwide popularity. The video has already more than 200,000 views on YouTube and they keep growing.

The video was released prior to the G20 summit hosted for the first time by Japan at the end of June, so they have managed to introduce the beautiful Osaka to the world with lyrics like “Let’s dance! Here is Osaka wonderful city!”

Watch the video below and I am looking forward to see more of the Obachaaan
