Sundays should be all about relaxation, chilling out and planning the next escapade. That is why we thought to bring you every Sunday a fun article on traveling, culture, food or any other amazing topic that would offer you this escapism. Today’s topic is Athens, Greece.

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, having a recorded history of over 3,400 years but human presence was recorded there a couple of millenniums BC, around 11th and 7th millennium BC. This is quite impressive and this history surrounds Athens and has been kept until the present days, as there are numerous historical sites all over Athens, starting with the heart of it that keeps the famous Acropolis of Athens.

AcropolisAcropolisAthens is more than just an old city, as it is said to be the “cradle of Western civilization”, being a center of art, philosophy and schooling, home of Aristotle’s Lyceum and Plato’s Academy. Being the first city to host the modern-day Olympic Games in the year 1896, Athens hosted the games again in 2004 and thus it became one of the very few cities in the world that hosted the Olympic Games more than once.

Olympic GamesWith all this history and historical monuments, there are plenty of things to do in Athens and you could visit for days all the museums, monuments, galleries and cultural institutions, but there is more to that. Athens has quite a busy night life in the Gazi neighborhood, lots of restaurants and cafes where you can have the best traditional meals with some of the best ingredients, lots of flea markets and of course a couple of great beaches where you can swim and relax. You could also take a fairy or a quick flight to visit the islands around Athens or even go sailing for one day. The possibilities are endless!

The important thing to know is that the best trip to Athens has to be for at least 1 week so you can see all the main attractions, while you explore and get a sense of the life in Athens. If you are there just for one weekend, make sure you got everything as organized as possible so you can really capture the essence of it and also enjoy the tavernas, a night out and the great views that Athens has to offer.
